In late June, I had an incredible experience while attending the With Grace and Gold Designer Workshop. I knew I felt confident moving forward with my design business, but I still felt lost at times because I’ve never run a small business before. It may be early, but it was one of the best decisions I’ve made so far this year for Be Bold Design Studio.
Our first night was a gentle “ease in” dinner where we got to know attendees over a lovely catered dinner. It was during then that designers shared their backgrounds – some from design school and some self-taught and shared their pain points. It was then that one of the attendees, exasperated as we all shared our pain points in our business, said, “I’m lonely!” Being a full-time designer often means you work from home – which has its perks but can get mundane.
As “me toos” rendered throughout the table, Andra responded, “This is now your community. We don’t have to be lonely anymore.”
I was so struck at how empowering is it that the With Grace and Gold women – designers and savvy business owners – saw a need in the designer community and made the first step to bridge the gap, helping other women in business.
This was the day that I came here for – a day filled with curriculum geared towards design business owners. Some topics included boosting your brand recognition, copywriting to your ideal client, project management, managing day to day operations.
And, what better way to start a full day of learning than with a coffee cart?

During the first session, we created an empathy map where we outlined our ideal customer’s thoughts, feelings, pain points. Empathy maps allow you to align your business and strategies with your ideal customer. It is a visual representation to help better understand which channels to focus on for a rewarding result. Honestly, at first I wasn’t sure this would do much for me, but it turned out to be one of the biggest takeaways for me at the workshop. I found so many similarities out of the clients I enjoyed working with most, which made me more confident in building design packages and marketing my own business to appeal to more ideal clients.
That session led to polishing our own brands so that they appeal to our ideal client and then composing copywriting to connect with that Ideal Client in a meaningful and memorable way.
We took a small lunch break for Chipotle – who knew to learn would make you so hungry!
Another favorite takeaway was how to build a meaningful client experience – step by step. I am so pumped for my design clients to experience the fruits of what I learned. It was one of my goals with Be Bold for every client to feel like they are unique – so having a one-of-kind client experience for them to help navigate the stress of creating a new brand and website is SO important for me to build in.
Overall, I was impressed with the curriculum of the day, the flow and how every lesson bounced back off. After each session was a chance for Q+A. It was refreshing to see Andra and Kelly be completely open and incredibly encouraging.
The last day included one more session and a wrap-up – on how to move forward with all the knowledge we gained during the workshop so that we would return home with a neatly-organized personalized plan for our success. We broke out into sessions including a mastermind with Andra and Kelly, small group mastermind and photography for new headshots.
Minneapolis is a GORGEOUS city. It’s clean, full of young residents and super trendy. I stayed at Luminn Hotel and was able to walk to the studio where the workshop was held. I loved how there were so many unique, local shops and restaurants within walking distance.
Attending the WGG Workshop was exactly what I needed to take the next step in my small design business. I feel so blessed to have been able to experience it. Andra and Kelly poured their hearts into this workshop and I could not be more thankful. They were business coaches, cheerleaders, teachers all-in-one with a professional, well-thought-out and complete workshop experience. My expectations for the workshop far exceeded and I would not change a thing. After struggling to piece together my business myself for so long, it was such a relief to walk out with clarity, confidence, and reassurance that I can achieve my dreams.
