The Be Bold Design Studio branding experience is something I feel so proud of because my goal is to help each client to be as involved in the design process as possible. In my experience, I have seen clients who have tried to piece together their brand the best they can – using cheap templates or buying a logo from Fiverr and then end up being frustrated that it doesn’t fit their vision. My process has taken the guesswork out of creating a brand, so all that the client has to do is trust. And, with intentional and authentic branding, I have seen my clients business and lives transform.
Our Design Process always starts with the Branding Questionnaire! This gives me the opportunity to learn as much as we can about my clients, before designing. This step is crucial because I am a strong believer that a brand should be a true reflection of my clients and their hearts. Some things I ask are:
Once I learn more, we dive deep into inspiration and gather visuals that inspire our clients. Everything I send on to the client must be approved by the client; I never move forward in the process until the client is 110% happy with what we’ve created or designed. When seeking inspiration, I believe that inspiration can be found everywhere. I absolutely love Pinterest – but I also love exploring our city, going to local coffee shops… and finding inspiration in the everyday! My very first foray into design was with newspaper and magazine design – so I often have 3-4 magazines sitting on my desk with several corners folded! I will create a Branding Moodboard, that lets my clients know that we are on the same page, and ready to design a logo that is perfect for their business.
Next, we start sketching! This part of the process gets pretty messy as I let my creativity run wild. Lots of ideas don’t make the final cut, but the ones that do, I send to clients. I’ll send 2-3 logo mockups so that they have the opportunity to let us know what they like, and what they don’t like!
I used to show more, but over time I’ve found that typically only 2 or 3 concepts feel really strong and it’s never worth it to show an idea that I am not totally confident in. I like to go ahead and show a couple variations of each one with a mini-mark and maybe a tagline, just to give the client a more clear idea of how each concept could expand as a full brand. The most important part of this presentation is the video I send, where I explain my thought process and the deeper meaning behind it.
I’ve found that many clients’ first reaction is to pick which concept they think looks the best based on their personal preference, but that’s not always the best choice for their business. Taking this extra step to film the video and speak about the meaning behind each concept helps them understand the process a little better and look at the design through their audience’s eyes. The video is also a great way for the clients to refer back to – I always tell them to take a couple of days to sleep on the concepts and make sure they don’t make a rash decision.
I offer a 2-round revision process so that my clients know they are getting a logo that represents their business the best.
After presenting my first concepts, the client is able to narrow it down to 1-2 that they want to move forward with and see explored further. With their feedback, I start the refinement phase, making tweaks where needed and creating more of the full brand with typography, color, and mockups.
Once we’ve settled on the final direction, I put everything together in a final proposal to give us a chance to review and make any little last minute tweaks before sending the client their final files! This final presentation summarizes everything we’ve created together, including all the pages from the Creative Direction, main logo, sub-logos, color palette with color codes, typography, illustration, and mockups. I also provide a brand style guide and file formats guide, to help my clients moving forward because oftentimes they do not know anything about what a .jpeg or .ai file is! My hope is that this presentation feels like the view from the top of a mountain for my client – they can see everything all together, the meaning is there, the heart behind it is obvious, and it gives them a deep confidence in where their business is headed.
Honestly, my favorite part is seeing the transformation. It brings me such joy, to see the passion and excitement in the businesses I work with. When they launch their new brand and website with pride, I feel the same amount of excitement with them.
